Over and Out

A little while ago I really wanted to create some cool stuff to share, but now I don't feel like sharing the results. Don't expect anything for a while.

P.S. My biggest pet peeve is having someone tell me my opinions aren't valid. I don't give a shit if you don't agree with me, but at least have the decency to respect me.

Over and out.

Thoughts & Junk

I really have destroyed any sort normal sleep schedule I used to have. Now during my normal comic time I'm too sleepy to do much of anything. Thus my lack of updates. I feel bad though so I will throw some random ideas at you that could've been comics were I not so much of a slacker.

+Why can I never find chapstick when I need it? I should buy 10 sticks and then I'd be sure to be able to find one of them...my lips hurt

+Damn, I'm out of noodles. However I still have plenty of sauce...would it be wrong to just eat the sauce? Would that even taste good? I probably shouldn't do it.

+Oh, really? An A on my video project? And what's that pretentious know-it-all kid? You only got an A-? Suck on that, bitch!

+I cannot believe people still accept this student ID...its in two pieces and the part with text is peeling off like a cheap sticker.

+What is with people and wasting their time on games like World of Warcraft or Everquest? Those games are lame. Although to be fair I have spent entire days playing Harvest Moon...

+Would I like to go to a bar to listen to Irish music? Well I do like live music and I do enjoy drinks...I'm not sure I like the combination though. I think I will pass.

+I just had a dream in which I slept with a girl who already had a boyfriend. On one hand she was gorgeous. On the other hand now I've got a case of dream shame.

Most of my thoughts get lost in the ether so those are the only ones I can really remember. Also in my defense Harvest Moon is awesome. I don't care what anyone says. Sure you spend all your time farming, but farming is actually a lot of fun when its done from the comfort of your own home. I don't know what else to say. Sorry about the lack of comics. Perhaps I'll break my chain of shitty ones and put some work into something...or maybe not. You can always make a comic yourself you know. As I'm sure you've learned they are quite easy when you don't care about quality.

*Sigh*

One of the reference librarians is on the older side and while she really is a nice person she is also notorious for talking people's ears off. My weekend supervisor has a standing order for me to call her line if she ever gets cornered.I am not very good at getting out of such situations...in fact I am quite bad and end up just sitting there silently wishing they'll notice my lack of interest and leave.

I'm a bit down on life at the moment, but I'm trying not to let that be an excuse for not comicing any more. Life is just too confusing sometimes. Maybe if I just sit here silently my worries will notice and just leave. But I somehow doubt it.

Lame Comics? For You!

I might end up doing some more super lame comics for you tonight seeing as I have nothing else to do, but we all know how bad I am about things like that.

+Well I suppose I'll probably have assembled some Robo-Pants for my Robo-Box in 3 years time, but I still doubt I'll have reached her any semblance of her level of adult-hood. Wow I made this one a little too small. In case you can't read it the little note next to my sister's husband says, "sometimes mustache"...because sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't.

+In case you were wondering, I did indeed want to be a Marine Biologist when I was little. The dream ended when I realized their job wasn't nearly as 10,000 Leagues Under The Sea as I had imagined.

Hmmm...I don't really like either of these comics...oh well. Better luck to me in the future.

Sleep is Sexy

Whew. That week sucked something fierce. But it's over and that's the important thing. It took a good day of sleeping to recover though. Whenever I sleep for extended periods of time I end up getting dreams that are much more vivid than usual. So while to some all I did yesterday was sleep, from my point of view I went to a wedding, cross country skiing, and more. Now I'm free to pursue activities in the material plane.

Speaking of which I finally finished China Miéville's The Scar today. Damn, good stuff. I don't know how that man does it, but just when you think you've got everything figured out it'll be revealed that you had no idea. There are multiple epic events that could have easily been the climax to the story which are instead harnessed into the service of a greater plot. It was also one of the first books in a while that I've had to read with my dictionary next to me. Miéville has an amazing vocabulary. Some examples, all used to great effect, by the way:
Attenuate: to weaken or make thin
Milliard: British: 109; US: a billion
Sepulchre: a tomb, a place for storing relics
Effluvium: a byproduct, waste, an exhalation of noxious vapor

Interestingly enough I've learned that there is a British long-scale numerical system where "Billion" is 1012 and "Trillion" is 1018. Here's the Wikipedia link if you're interested.
Long and Short Scales

Alrighty, I think I might just try to come up with a comic to end this hiatus. Hopefully I will return in triumph.

A Brief Public Service Announcement

"Junoesque" means "to have the stately bearing and imposing beauty of the goddess Juno". It in absolutely no way means "like that movie Juno" or "like that chick in that movie Juno". Only you can stop the slander of this neat word.

This has been a public service announcement.

No Comics?

Ok so don't expect any comics this week. Getting up the drive to even do short crappy ones would be a challenge. I'm pretty certain that this week will either kill me or leave me a quivering mess. Here's why.

Tuesday: Have to give a presentation for Comm 260 and turn in a video for Documentary Form
Wednesday: I'll be responsible for coming with thoughtful questions based on the readings for Japanese(that has disaster written all over it), then work my shift at the library.
Thursday: Midterm for Documentary Form, circulation desk meeting, and then turn in a rough draft of my thesis(this one'll be filling up free time in the days leading up to this).
Friday: Have Japanese stuff prepared as usual, and then working at the library until 5.

Ugh school...why do you hate me? At the end of all this mess I'm pretty sure I'm going to be in serious need of some relaxation and/or good times. I should think of something fun so I'll have something to look forward to. Ok, this break has gone on long enough, time to go spend the night editing video and writing thesis. Blaaaaaah.

Because He Said So

Well usually I don't give in to these random "tag" questions, but I do like to contribute to mutual blog reading, so I'll acquiesce to Lee's request.

The question is to name 20 albums that have had some profound impact on you. Ok here goes in no particular order.

1. The Postal Service - Give Up
2. The Hopefuls - The Fuses Refuse to Burn
3. Blink-182 - Enema of the State
4. Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies
5. Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
6. Mark Mallman - Mr. Serious
7. Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit Gold
8. Ross Sutter - Mama Will You Buy Me a Banana
9. The Hopefuls - Now Playing At The One-Seat Theater
10. Chris Koza - The Dark Delirious Morning
11. mc chris - Life's a Bitch and I'm Her Pimp
12. The Weepies - Say I Am You
13. Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
14. Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly
15. Asian Kung-Fu Generation - Rewrite
16. Bowling For Soup - A Hangover You Don't Deserve
17. Karmella's Game - The Art of Distraction
18. Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
19. Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic
20. Blink-182 - Blink-182

Wow that is a strange grouping. Their impacts range from changing how I think about something to just changing my taste in music to just making me feel good. I don't know what else to say. If you've got any wonderings go ahead you can ask otherwise I shall bow out silently.

Truly Mini-Comics

I felt bad about ditching you guys on the comics front so after I finished up some Japanese translations at "work" I moved on to doing some comics on little pieces of scrap paper of events from yesterday. I tried to fill up 10 pieces, but I obviously failed, you'll be able to tell when I desperately tried to get the 8th one done in my remaining minute at work. I'll post them in the order I did them.

1-3I wish I had cool reasons to stay up too late, but I rarely do. China Mieville's books are pure evil, by the way.

4Oooo I hate when I can't get an emotion right. I wanted confusion/anger/defeat! Errrrrg. I rarely ever get compliments on my appearance. So when I do get one I'm not sure how to take it and thus my reactions will differ. However, they usually begin with me wondering whether or not they're being serious. After all clothes boggle my mind. The only semi-applicable skill I have is being familiar with color theory. Who doesn't love a good color wheel?

5Twer you to look in on me Saturday morning you would have seen me doing my damnedest to create a comic/card in the time span of 1.5 hours. I only semi-manged to actually do it and that was only by sacrificing the cover for the inside. Clearly, like always, I should do this stuff ahead of time.

6

Did anyone actually understand the Harrison Bergeron reference? If you did I love you. I really am a wee bit freaked out of the idea of being stabbed with a high heel. You should be too, you just know it's happened before.

7Cupcakes!

8

Two things you can bet I'll forget to do, 1) People's names and, 2) Complimenting your appearance. Rest assured I will feel immensely embarrassed that I forgot your name and just because I don't say something out loud doesn't mean I don't think it.

But seriously can someone really turn their appearance or their personality on/off? If you're an intelligent person, you're always an intelligent person. If you look gorgeous, you're always going to look gorgeous. If you're a dick, I probably don't hang out with you because you're always a total dick.

Ok I'm going to go piss like a banshee and then go for a walk because the sky is showing...and because I need to go get some groceries.

Why Is No One Around?

I was just thinking too much, as per usual, and somehow got onto the subject of "manly things". My inner monologue went something like this:

"Yeah, manly things! Manly things like...shucking oysters and jumping off of cliffs...wait...what?"

Needless to say this makes me laugh, which is quite sad considering I am laughing at my own thinking processes. I've been particularly bad, in recent days, with getting pronunciations and standard phrases correct. Either my brain has taken it upon itself to make these things more awesome or make me look foolish in the eyes of others. I have yet to decipher which it is.

Also no one is ever around when I come across something that really tickles my fancy. This is probably for the best as I tend to be a little too happy about it. No one else seems to be able to see the delightful humor in it. Alas.

Got VD?

Happy Valentines Day my lovely readers. You all look especially gorgeous today, by the way.

Sorry for the lack of comics recently. Damn you school! Or perhaps damn me for not being as diligent a worker as I should be...probably the latter. I did do a valentine strip, but time constraints rushed me and I didn't have time to snag a picture before I gave it away. I would have had to edit some parts anyway so that would have been a pain. There were some choice moments in it though. So you'll just have to imagine what it was like...pretty good, eh?

I have a partial comic in my sketchbook that I never finished due to lack of punchline, but I really should take another crack at it. It was about how to annoy people at parties, something I can achieve with a subtle yet elegant grace. One of the primary techniques is refusing anything offered to you. People cannot stand it when you refuse to take anything from them. Like a parry to their thrusts.

"But don't you want to try new things?" Don't get me wrong I love trying new things. You can go look at that list of some of the weird stuff I ate at the fair if you want some proof. However, for me food has to make the first move. A subtle look, an enticing aroma: something to peek my interest. Then I will certainly give it a try. In a related note I believe I have moved from thinking tea is absolutely nasty, to simply thinking it implicitly distasteful...or something. Not revolting, but not delicious. Teetering upon the tightrope between the two. Perhaps my blunt taste buds cannot detect the subtle finery of flavors or perhaps everyone else just has an unnatural love of herby water.

Well dear readers, I must be off. I sincerely hope your Valentine's Day was enjoyable. Date or not, somebody loves you and that's what is really important. So don't forget, eh?

I Slept All Day!

Be back in a bit to do a little writing. Just wanted to make sure it got up on time....ok back.

This comic is wholly accurate. Unless, of course, you count midnight as being the start of a new day. In that case I went on an awesome walk and although I numbed my extremities a significant amount I would do it again in a heartbeat. However, I do not count midnight as the switch to the new day. I count whenever I wake up or whenever I look out the window and suddenly notice it is bright out and the birds are chirping. Whichever comes first. Because of this all I did today was go to class, cooked some eggs&bacon, slept and picked up some necessities from the store.

You'd think that only taking a few minutes to do these comics would let me get them done before the edge of midnight, but you'd be wrong. I am quite proud that I'm starting to get better at drawing decently quickly. Must mean I'll have to keep doing these things to keep in practice.

Also I should mention that napping to the sounds of 89.3 The Current is quite enjoyable and I heartily recommend it.

Adventure Time?

Can't talk, gotta walk.

[Edit:] Not much to say about this one. I really don't have many of what I'd call "adventures". I would love to hang out with George Washington, though. Also for those of you who didn't catch it "Adventure Time" is the name of a little animation I love to death that you can watch here. It's totally Algebraic!
ADVENTURE TIME!

I'm On To you

Whenever someone asks me something about an event they've already heard a first hand account of I get a little weird.I first wonder what they've already heard. My natural curiosity then wants to know what they know, however, I then begin to wonder what would happen if my version turns out to be significantly different from theirs. What if I say I had a great time and then it turns out that someone else didn't. That could be embarrassing. Perhaps they are asking in an attempt to trip me up. Well, I'm on to you people. I've seen through the fog of your deception. Oh, random paranoia...my old nemesis; the curse of people who think about things to excessive degrees. I'm sure there is an easy way to get around this paranoia and get at the secrets I harbor, if you figure it out I'd like to know.

If only I was better at reading people. Perhaps then I wouldn't wonder what they were thinking so often. Sadly, however, signals are lost on me like crop signals to a farmer. College prank or a deep connection from the stars? Who knows? Not me.

Dance Your Cares Away

Is this a really big one? Yes! Is there action? You know it! Did you actually bother to care about quality this time? God no! However, I did bother to rearrange the panels into a better order and do my best to make the lines clearer.
In case you were wondering, yes, if I get in a depressed enough state I have been known to dance so hard that I get exhausted. And then I feel better. Also this comic is only a brief glimpse at how bad my dancing is. Were you to see the real thing your retinas would shrivel up and die. That is why I don't dance in front of other people, not for my own sense of shame, but to protect you. Actually it's mostly the shame thing. To answer another unasked question, yes, my conscious is that big of a dick.

So I thought I had said that I would do these things for a week before deciding whether of not I'd keep doing them, but it turns out I never said that. Meaning I had no reason to post two comics yesterday...damn. Someone should have told me. I'll put this out to the readers (there was 3 at last count) whether or not to keep doing them. You'll get comics, just comics of hideous quality. I do this kind of crap anyway so it's up to you if you want to keep seeing the horrors.

Catch Up

Muhahaha, as of this super shitty comic that I did in the mad dash to get in in before midnight, I am now caught up on my duties of creating shitty mini-comics.
Damn...this one is shitty. Tsks upon me.

Math-Powers!

Hey, Jesse, why do you feel slightly incompetent around Math&Science majors? Good question.
Wow...sometimes shitty camera pictures just do not want to be cleaned up, thus the weird change in the middle there. Apparently one half was a lot dark than the other. Either way that robot is awesome.

Also if any one knows how on earth you save a baby by using a²+b²=c² I would love to know.

I'm Mad!

It confuses me when someone prefaces a sentence with a plea for me not to be mad. Usually because it is in regards to something trivial. "What do you mean there is no more Root Beer!? Godspit!" Perhaps I'm just thinking about it too literally.

I have to admit my love for the last panel. It just pleases me. I also have to laugh at the bad quality I get from taking these pictures with my camera and then messing with them in Gimp a tad. Fits kind of nicely with the sloppy art though, eh?

Ok I must be off to try and get some work done. I have to turn in an essay and some thesis rough draft tomorrow. Before I leave I'll let you in on the hidden joke in this comic: Maddie keeps bugging me to put her in a comic. Now I have...except not at all. Haha, momentai Maddie, I'm sure you'll find your way into one eventually.

Cross Words...Get It?

Nothing very comic worthy happened today. So you know what? You get random events and lame puns! HOORAY!
Do you get it? Cross words in the sense of angry words. Yeah, it is kind of dumb, but the best my brain can do with the limited time left in the day. Even sadder is that my crossword streak this week has ended on a complete failure. I was doing so well!

No...Not Freeze Tag

So here is a mini-comic. I decided to try these out and see how it goes. I can do one in under 10 minutes so they are pretty easy, especially since I used my camera instead of a scanner. I think I will try and do one every day for a bit and see if I like them...at the very least do a better job at them.

Sadly, I've never been blessed in the area of coming up with fun group activities. Which is just a nice way of saying I'm really quite bad at it.

Holy crap...these temperature reading says it is 52F outside! Weather like that means I am going to go for a walk, possibly pick up some ingredients for dinner while I'm at it.

P.S. Freeze tag is awesome.

Groundhog's Day

Every year I tell myself that I'll watch Bill Murray's Groundhog Day on Groundhog Day and every year when February 2nd rolls around I forget that Groundhog Day exists. The more times I forget the worse the sting of forgetting is. I suppose there are much worse things though. I will just settle for watching it in the month of February, because it really is a fun movie.

Yesterday I picked up one of the free copies of the New York Times and continued my quest to master those damn crossword puzzles. Except for getting sent off track by a couple of really weird answers and those evil golf themed ones, I kicked its ass. Like usually this comes with a generous boost to my ego. Even more impressive is that I did it while running on almost nothing but tea. Oh how I wish I liked tea. Forcing myself to drink that stuff is never fun.

I am very much ready for this cold weather to pass. I've been in a suspender mood, but it has been a little too chilly for that. On the subject of clothes here is a picture I took over winter break to show what a shirt from middle-school looks like. And yes, that shit still fits. I'm not sure how that works. ...It seems my hair insists on doing weird things no matter what length it is at... especially when cameras are around. I have no control and usually don't try to pretend I do. Besides cutting it when it gets too long I don't try to enforce my will upon it.

Ok I need to post this now, because I do so hate pictures of myself. I'm sure you all hate pictures of me as well. You're lucky I like you, dear reader, otherwise I'd never stoop to looking dumb just for the sake of giving you something to read.

25 Random J-Facts

The idea of writing 25 ideas about yourself seems to be circulating on facebook. I don't feel like writing them there, so I will do it here instead. Why treat random facebook people to random facts about me when I could treat you readers instead? Here goes.
----------------------------------------

1. If I could punch one person with no consequences I would clock Bill Watterson...and then give him a hug.

2. I started getting into drawing partially because it is fun and partially because my dear friend Ms. Sutter's art is just so amazing that it made me want to try to see if I could ever get good enough to inspire someone else.

3. I will accidentally slip into my own thoughts sometimes and inadvertently stop listening to other people.

4. I have a ton of aspirations in my life, but none of them are related to jobs and thus I have no idea what I'll end up doing.

5. I can distinctly remember when the Power Rangers were cool.

6. For a long time I wondered why Disney had a weird stylized Q or a backwards G in their logo. Then I realized that is was a weird looking D, which made a lot more sense. Although I still think it isn't very D-like.

7. I'm a little OCD when it comes to having smells on my hands.

8. I went to the library all the time when I was little because they had air conditioning and now I love places that have a ton of books.

9. Although I now find it hilarious, the movie Gremlins scared the shit out of me when I was little. I could just imagine them popping out of cupboards or the hole in the basement.

10. I grew up on an island on the Mississippi river and still think that is pretty cool.

11. I was in wrestling in high school for 2 years, which always seems to shock people. Probably because I'm an introverted nerd artist.

12. I really do love Minnesota. The music scene, the thunderstorms, the snow, the lakes, the rivers, the people, what's not to love? The cold? The cold kills the freakier bugs and thus is very much welcome, in my opinion.

13. I'm always hungry for information. Facts, trivia, skills, etc. My favorite things to learn are things I have no idea about.

14. I sing along to songs all the time (or at least try to), but almost never if other people are around.

15. I'm horrible at giving compliments, but I think of them all the time.

16. If asked a direct question my brain will immediately freeze up. Even if the question is really simple. It creates many an embarrassing situation.

17. I talk too much when I'm excited.

18. I'll still tear up sometimes when I think about my cousin Tyrel. When I was a kid I idolized him and I suppose I still do. Fucking car accidents.

19. I've never stopped loving the things I did as a kid: comics, animation, games, monsters, silly jokes, and other such things.

20. I had to go to speech class when I was little...although I can't remember what my particular speech impediment was.

21. I laugh a lot, but usually because I'll see or hear something and my brain will change it around or take it in a different direction that I find amusing.

22. Moving vehicles make me sleepy. Also I've been told I can fall sleep nearly anywhere.

23. I'm not good at buying clothes. My money always ends up in the hands of books and movies. For this reason I have some really old clothes. Luckily I still fit into the old stuff.

24. My aunt gave me this watch and it is awesome. It is mirrored so it runs counter-clockwise. It is extremely fun to see people's faces when they try to look at the time without asking me.

25. For the past 2 years I've made my Halloween costumes by hand. My sewing skills are still quite poor, but getting better. Take that store-bought costumes!

I'm Mc-freakin-Giver!

Today I fixed my broken belt using nothing more than a hairpin. I've been dying to tell this to people all day, because I am immensely pleased about it. I had to call my mom just so I could tell someone. I get a big smirk just thinking about it. Think of me what you will. You know you're impressed.

I'm like 50% done with the picture from last time. I've been taking the time to actually put details in and such. However, tomorrow I have an amazing amount of homework to catch up on. In all likely hood tomorrow is going to suck. Hopefully I'll be able to rally my energy and get shit done. Yes, get things done!

...yeah. I don't believe it either.

The soundtrack to Muppet Christmas Carol just came on and although it is out of season I feel compelled to listen to the whole album so I can sing along. Best Christmas Movie EVER! So good that I rank it high among regular movies as well.

While I certainly go on for length about the rest of today, I'll cut things short. I shall leave you with the message that I recently saw Slumdog Millionaire and it is one of the greatest things I've ever seen. You should go see it. Heck, I will gladly go with you and watch it again. Danny Boyle's movies are quickly starting to dominate my list of favorites: Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and now Slumdog Millionaire. Soooooo good, all of them.

"In all the places you find love
It feels like Christmas
It is the season of the heart
A special time of caring
The ways of love made clear
It is the season of the spirit
The message if we hear it
Is make it last all year"
-Muppet Christmas Carol
